What a fun workshop this was with a room full of enthusiastic students. Paul began the day by mark making, in paint,on his canvas, to sketch the basis for his painting. He continued, still using the same brush, and fairly thin paint, to cover the canvas with colour with flat areas of colour, lines. The colours he uses are vibrant and give his paintings energy and life.
Our delicious morning tea followed, supplied by Narelle Harvey and Catherine Feder, while Paul’s painting was drying. After morning tea, and using our own reference material, we started to sketch with paint on our own canvases. Paul encouraged us to interpret his instruction but to still use our own style to create our own paintings. However, we were painting a little more freely than, perhaps we normally would, which was a challenge for many of us. As we worked on our own paintings, he continued to develop his own painting using thicker paint describing everything that he was doing, so we could do the
same, when we were up to that stage in our paintings. He then came around to all of us individually to assist with any areas where we were struggling a little.
It was difficult to stop for lunch, but it did allow some time for our own paintings to dry a little, ready to be completed by the time we had to pack up. When we put them all together, at the end of the day, we could see the diversity of styles and how differently each of us interpreted the information that Paul had imparted. Paul was extremely generous with his knowledge and encouraged us to view our paintings from far away to see the best effect. We all learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed the day.
