This was an outstanding workshop led by Josefia Lemon, who began with a clear and informative explanation of materials - emphasising the importance of good-quality brushes, paints and an effective setup. She thoughtfully checked each participant's materials to ensure they were equipped to get the best possible results. Her guidance throughout was considerate and clearly communicated.
We began with a tonal study of an imaginary landscape. Josefia demonstrated how to break the scene down, mix and test tones and apply them swiftly to achieve impact. To our delight, we each produced a strong piece in just 20 minutes.
After a delicious morning tea, generously provided by Catherine, we moved on to a Sydney harbour scene. Josefia gave another excellent, step-by-step, demonstration, helping everyone understand how to approach the painting with minimal drawing. A large wash was applied over the sky and water and the scene was built up in layers. The buildings emerged with thoughtful use of warm and cool tones and the foreground foliage was added in deeper shades to create contrast and depth.
In the afternoon, we tackled a dramatic Lake Jindabyne landscape under stormy clouds. Josefia's lessons on value and paint preparation proved essential and the results, across the group, were impressive.
Everyone agreed this was a truly inspiring workshop with a generous expert tutor and we all came away having leaned a great deal.
